Philosophers stand with CEU

On April 10, 2017, the President of Hungary Janos Ader signed into law amendments to Hungary’s national higher education legislation which restrict academic freedom for CEU and other international universities operating in Hungary.

CEU strongly disagreed with this decision and, accordingly, pursued all available legal remedies. The university has also taken all necessary actions in order to comply with “Lex CEU”. The State of New York successfully negotiated a draft agreement with Hungary allowing CEU to retain its American accreditation. CEU was in full compliance with the conditions required by the government.

Nevertheless, the Hungarian authorities have indicated that they would not sign the New York State agreement. Therefore all attempts to find a solution that would enable CEU to remain as a U.S. degree-granting institution in Budapest have failed.

On 25 October 2018, the Board of Trustees authorized moving CEU from Budapest to Vienna. Starting in the academic year 2020/21, the Department of Philosophy will fully operate in Vienna.

More information about these events is here.

After the announcement of Lex CEU, we received enormous support from the Hungarian and international philosophical community. We remain deeply grateful to the thousands of supporters whose vigorous defense of free inquiry, free exchange of knowledge, and free institutions of learning continues to encourage us. CEU will maintain the continuity of its teaching and research, its degree programs, and its service to the community, without interruption.
