Repentance is a film reaching beyond its time and geography, thanks to the tragedy it's set on being experienced by numerous societies -- something we all know, and something we do observe in today's world, too. The story begins with the death of the highly-reputed Varlam Aravidze, an ex-mayor of a town in Georgia. It appears to get supernatural, as the corpse is repeatedly found out of its grave, despite the reburials and the cage. It doesn't take long, though, for the public to find out how this happens, which leads to a court case, followed by a long flashback episode showing the dictatorship of Aravidze. After this, the film shows how the guilt of the past is transferred to the present, and keeps on spreading.
This screening will also close the academic year for the Philm Club.
